Brenton Wood, the soul singer behind such songs as “Woogum Boogum Song'' and “Gimme Little Sign,'' has died at the age of 83.
Wood's family confirmed the news to Fox News Digital.
“Our family would like to thank all of my father's fans for the outpouring of love they showed us. He loved and cherished you, and you all showed him how much you loved him. ” they wrote.

They continued, “A few years after we recorded our big hit, my father told me that the record company took everything away and left him with just the name Brenton Wood. Thank you for that!”
In 1967, Wood had his first hit with “The Oogum Boogum Song,” which reached number 19 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He then had his biggest hit, “Gimme Little Sign,” which reached number 9 on the pop charts.

A statement from his family said: “He described his style as 'personal' and contrary to mainstream ethnic and musical stereotypes. But he was most proud of the 1980s. It was my artistic reinvention from the 1990s to the 1990s.” “His newfound stage fame during this period secured him a place in popular culture as the founder of the 'oldies but goodies' movement.”

Born Alfred Jesse Smith in Shreveport, Louisiana, Wood moved with his family to San Pedro, California as a child, and later settled in Compton, California.
The family said, “My father often attributed his success over the years to his devoted 'hometown' fans and loved to connect with them whenever possible. He was enthusiastic about playing.” He loved meeting fans on their own grounds in the West, where he had cultivated a huge following over the years, and wanted to give back the love he felt as a superstar in their 'homeland'. ”
In 2024, Wood embarked on a farewell tour, “Catch You on the Rebound: The Last Tour,” named after the 1967 song. The tour was temporarily suspended when the singer was hospitalized in May.

in In a statement to Variety magazine, Manny Gallegos, Wood's manager and assistant, said Wood died of natural causes at his home in Moreno Valley, California, surrounded by his family. According to Gallegos, his last words were, “Catch me on the rebound.”

Wood's family said in a statement: “Reflecting on recent music and his career, his father said, 'It's all about memories.'” I hope he gives you as many unforgettable moments as he gave us. ”
