OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly wants to build chip fabrication plants with investment money

bloomberg news On Friday, we reported on the OpenAI CEO's goal to establish a factory dedicated to semiconductors, a key component of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The outlet cited anonymous sources “familiar with the plans.”

Reports have been circulating for months that Mr. Altman has been trying to scrape together the necessary funds.

According to Bloomberg, he said significant investment would be needed to accelerate the effort and that he was approaching companies for possible funding.

According to Bloomberg, Altman is in talks with technology company G42 and is seeking $8 billion to $10 billion. SoftBank is reportedly another company he has negotiated with.

FOX Business has reached out to OpenAI, G42, and SoftBank for comment.

As part of Altman's global semiconductor business, multiple chip manufacturing plants will reportedly be established in collaboration with other companies.

Bloomberg named Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Samsung, and Intel as potential companies to partner with OpenAI. FOX Business reached out to these companies for comment, but Intel declined to comment.

OpenAI is the company behind ChatGPT, which went through some turmoil late last year amid Altman's dismissal and return, but was first released to the public in late 2022.

The company has since started offering several different versions of its hugely popular AI chatbot, as well as application programming interfaces and other tools.

Earlier this month, the company rolled out a store of custom ChatGPT bots created by users to paying customers.
