OpenAI’s New Mobile Smart Speaker in the Works

OpenAI is apparently developing a mobile smart speaker, marking its entry into hardware with AI functions. This device, referred to as a screenless “companion” by Sam Altman, aims to integrate with ChatGPT and offer personalized AI services for homes.

According to a report, OpenAI’s first hardware effort is taking the form of a smart speaker endowed with artificial intelligence. Still in development, this device is being envisioned as a human-like companion that not only connects with ChatGPT but also provides various home AI functions.

OpenAI has expressed interest in hardware products for some time, and there were earlier hints that the company might even venture into the smartphone arena to compete with Apple. However, this new device appears to diverge from conventional smart speakers currently on the market.

Insiders suggest that the speaker will develop a personality over time, actively learning about its owner to deliver increasingly tailored services. Reports indicate that it will access users’ digital lives, pulling information from sources like emails to optimize its functions.

A particularly unique aspect of the device is its ability to move autonomously. A report by Bloomberg suggests that it’s designed to feel like a companion, serving as a tangible representation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology.

Bloomberg’s analysis notes that the development team includes several former Apple engineers, who contributed to flagship products like the iPhone and Mac. This connection to Apple is notably significant, especially in light of recent legal tussles between the two companies.

Previously, it was reported that Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the company engaged in efforts to misappropriate Apple’s hardware secrets across various operational levels.

The lawsuit has surfaced as a surprising turn of events, considering that both companies announced a collaboration in 2024 intending to integrate ChatGPT into iPhone operating systems, with Altman visiting Apple’s headquarters to celebrate the partnership. However, their relationship has soured since OpenAI disclosed intentions to step into hardware.

OpenAI’s drive into hardware coincides with growing enthusiasm in the tech sector for consumer AI devices. This shift into physical products follows OpenAI’s recent acquisition of Jony Ive’s startup, fuelling speculation about its plans for hardware development.

Other players in the market are also attempting to seize this opportunity. Hark, an AI research institute founded by Brett Adcock, recently completed a successful $700 million Series A funding round, reaching a valuation of $6 billion. The company aims to create what it calls “personal intelligence” by merging proprietary AI models with custom hardware designed to serve as a universal interface between humans and machines. However, details about the device’s form are still under wraps, revealing the extent of investment flowing into this sector even before products hit the shelves.
