OpenAI’s IPO Plans Unfold

OpenAI is getting ready to confidentially file for an initial public offering, expected in the weeks to come, according to sources who spoke with Reuters. This move adds to a wave of notable listings anticipated over the next year.

The company behind ChatGPT, which was last valued at a whopping $852 billion, is looking to make this announcement shortly after Elon Musk successfully navigated a significant legal challenge. Interestingly, this development might expedite Musk’s own IPO plans for SpaceX, which was expected to be revealed soon.

“Clearing the legal issues provides a significant boost for an IPO and likely encourages OpenAI to ramp up its timeline,” stated Kat Liu, Vice President at IPOX.

OpenAI has its sights set on going public as soon as September, with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley assisting in drafting an IPO prospectus intended for regulatory submission shortly.

Liu remarked that timing the filing close to SpaceX’s IPO would lessen scrutiny on OpenAI, allowing it to better present its narrative. “Simultaneous filings will push portfolio managers to analyze both companies side by side.”

As of now, OpenAI has yet to respond to inquiries from Reuters. Reports earlier suggested that OpenAI was planning to raise at least $60 billion in its IPO negotiations, valuing the company potentially at up to $1 trillion.

The excitement around innovative AI applications has spurred investor interest in firms that are likely to become leading players with the extensive adoption of this technology.

In a significant funding round earlier this year, OpenAI reportedly raised $122 billion, possibly marking the largest in Silicon Valley’s history.

However, the company has had to revise its product strategy a couple of times recently, facing tough competition from rivals like Google and Anthropic.

Some industry analysts suggest that Anthropic may soon surpass OpenAI in revenue growth as it solidifies its leadership within the enterprise AI sector.

OpenAI mentioned earlier that its ChatGPT now serves upwards of 900 million weekly active users, with more than 50 million consumer subscribers.
