OpenAI Secures Major Funding Round Valued at $840 Billion
OpenAI announced on Friday that it has successfully raised $110 billion in a substantial funding round, which values the creator of ChatGPT at an impressive $840 billion. This deal underscores the rapid investment trends in the artificial intelligence sector.
This funding round is considered one of the largest private financings in history. It features significant investments, including $30 billion from SoftBank, another $30 billion from Nvidia, and $50 billion from Amazon. This influx of capital comes as OpenAI prepares for a forthcoming mega IPO anticipated later this year.
OpenAI mentioned that more investors are likely to join this round as it progresses.
Disney Comes on Board with $1 Billion Equity Investment
Major tech firms and influential investors like SoftBank are actively seeking partnerships with OpenAI. The company has made significant investments in data centers, aiming to leverage its relationship with OpenAI for a competitive edge in the AI landscape.
For OpenAI, this new funding will be directed toward acquiring advanced AI chips and the necessary computing capabilities to remain a leader in the industry, especially with rising competition from ChatGPT competitors like Claude Anthropic and Google’s Gemini.
According to sources, OpenAI plans to ramp up its total computing expenditure to roughly $600 billion by the year 2030.
Partnership with Amazon
Besides the $50 billion investment, OpenAI and Amazon have entered into an agreement granting OpenAI access to 2 gigawatts of computing power driven by Amazon’s proprietary Trainium AI chips.
The collaboration is an extension of a $38 billion cloud agreement established last year. OpenAI anticipates spending an additional $100 billion on Amazon Web Services over the next eight years while developing customized models for Amazon’s engineering teams.
The initial commitment from Amazon stands at $15 billion, with intentions to contribute another $35 billion in the coming months, contingent on certain criteria being met.
Amazon Web Services will act as the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI Frontier, OpenAI’s enterprise platform centered around building and managing AI agents.
This partnership does not alter the existing relationship between OpenAI and Microsoft. Microsoft Azure will remain the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI’s APIs, which grant access to its models.
Altman Critiques Musk’s Space Data Center Plans
OpenAI’s first-party products will still be hosted on Azure, and Microsoft will keep exclusive licenses and access to OpenAI’s intellectual property across its models and offerings.
Nvidia’s Investment Raises Industry Concerns
Nvidia’s $30 billion contribution to OpenAI solidifies its financial stake in one of its key customers, further intertwining their partnership in the rapidly evolving AI industry.
This move illustrates a growing trend in the tech sector where companies invest in and form supply agreements with each other, which has raised alarms about potential “circular” financing arrangements.
It remains unclear if this latest investment from Nvidia will replace its earlier commitment to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, which was previously announced in September.
OpenAI and Nvidia have yet to respond to inquiries for clarification regarding this situation.
Currently, ChatGPT boasts over 900 million weekly active users, according to OpenAI, with more than 50 million consumer subscribers. January and February are projected to see a peak in new subscriber growth.
The company’s Codex product, focused on AI-assisted coding, is also experiencing growth, with weekly users increasing more than threefold to 1.6 million since the start of the year.
