OpenAI Partners with Google Cloud for ChatGPT
OpenAI has revealed plans to utilize Google’s cloud infrastructure for ChatGPT. Previously, the AI company primarily partnered with Microsoft, but that collaboration has faced some strain recently.
As OpenAI looks to enhance its cloud capabilities, the partnership with Google Cloud aims to address limitations in capacity and meet the increasing need for AI-driven chatbots. This shift is significant for OpenAI, which depended solely on Microsoft up until now.
The collaboration will see OpenAI utilize Google Cloud’s platform and its API across various countries, including the U.S., Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, and the U.K. This marks a notable transition for the company.
Reports indicate that tension exists between OpenAI and Microsoft, primarily due to OpenAI’s desire to fully comprehend Microsoft’s AI offerings and computing power. The AI startup is seeking Microsoft’s endorsement as it contemplates converting into a for-profit entity, a move that would help it attract more funding and possibly go public. However, discussions have been challenging.
There’s also talk among OpenAI executives about possibly calling out Microsoft for anti-competitive practices. This “nuclear option” might involve initiating a public campaign against Microsoft to prompt a federal regulatory investigation into antitrust matters—a move that could jeopardize the partnership entirely.
With Google Cloud, OpenAI expects to enhance its operations and ensure a better experience for ChatGPT users. While Google’s cloud segment is smaller and newer compared to Amazon and Microsoft, it has made notable progress in the AI field. Additionally, Google collaborates with Anthropic, another AI startup created by former OpenAI leaders.
The partnership with Google Cloud isn’t the only strategy OpenAI has adopted to tackle its capacity issues. The company has entered into agreements with other cloud service providers like CoreWeave and Oracle. Earlier this year, OpenAI committed to a five-year, $12 billion deal with CoreWeave, while Oracle announced a collaboration with Microsoft and OpenAI, expanding the Microsoft Azure AI platform to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
Despite these new partnerships, Microsoft remains a crucial player in OpenAI’s ecosystem. Even though it’s no longer the exclusive provider of OpenAI’s computing resources, Microsoft still has exclusive access to OpenAI’s programming interface.
