This year’s Oscars embraced diversity in a new way by requiring all Best Picture nominees to fill a “slot.” The move was part of the academy’s DEI axis, which began in 2020 at the height of the Black Lives Matter uprisings.
But Sunday’s television broadcast made no mention of the new rules. Even Hollywood’s leading trade press, despite touting diversity for the past four years, avoided the topic in the weeks leading up to the Oscars.
The strange silence is likely due to continued ratings slump for the Oscars, where ratings are still significantly down despite a slight uptick last year.

As Breitbart News reported, the Academy’s rules specify diversity quotas for cast and crew that include women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ people. In addition, specific diversity benchmarks are specified for marketing and internship programs.
The rules are vague and complex, with many loopholes that allow films that: oppenheimer Being recognized as “diverse.”
