Critics of President Donald Trump have recently expressed support for his decision to launch attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Notably, former national security adviser John Bolton commended the move, suggesting it represented a significant shift in the Middle East approach to Iran.
Trump announced over the weekend that the U.S. had successfully targeted Iran’s nuclear sites, asserting that Iran’s nuclear capabilities were “completely wiped out.” Bolton, in an interview, reflected on the timing of the U.S. strike, referring to a prior two-week timeline mentioned by the White House, questioning whether it was a mere tactic. He felt this action should have occurred much sooner and noted that it would be interesting to observe Iran’s response if it continued to threaten American interests.
Another Republican figure, former Congressman Adam Kinzinger, agreed with the president’s actions via social media, labeling the decision a wise one. He had been vocal at the Democratic National Committee and backed Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential race.
In an interesting twist, even some of Trump’s harshest critics have acknowledged the potential importance of his decisions. Brett Stevens, a columnist for the New York Times, while critical of Trump generally, stated that this move was deserving of respect, whereas colleague David French emphasized it was a necessary action to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
French further argued that Parliament should have a role in determining military actions, advocating for a formal war powers resolution. Conversely, some Democrats and even certain GOP members criticized Trump’s actions as unconstitutional, pointing out he hadn’t received Congressional approval for the attacks.
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, known for his criticisms of Trump, still supported the president’s decision, suggesting it was a challenging but necessary call. He highlighted that Trump aimed to avoid the missteps seen with North Korea, stating he was determined not to let Iran follow a similar path to developing nuclear capabilities.
Commentators in various forums have noted that despite a history of controversial decisions, Trump’s actions against Iran have been deemed decisive and timely. Retired generals, speaking to networks like CNN and MSNBC, echoed this sentiment, praising the military strategy involved. They stated that the U.S. had capitalized on a moment of Iranian vulnerability, believing the attacks might have lasting implications on Iran’s nuclear progress.
