Oregon athletes receive award for their stand against transgender participation in sports

Oregon Athletes Honored for Standing Up for Women’s Sports Rights

At the 7th Annual Fox Nation Patriot Awards held Thursday night, two female athletes from Oregon were recognized for their strong stance on women’s rights in sports. This followed their refusal to share the podium with transgender competitors, a situation neither of them anticipated would escalate into a national conversation.

Alexa Anderson, a freshman pole vaulter at the University of South Alabama, and Reece Eckardt from Biola University’s women’s track and field team, chose not to stand on the podium after a transgender student finished fifth in the women’s high jump finals at the Oregon Activities Association event back in May. They were awarded the “Most Valuable Patriot Award” during the ceremony in Brookville, New York.

These athletes later filed a lawsuit, claiming they were omitted from official photos and their medals were withheld following the incident.

During her acceptance speech, Anderson expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “We are so grateful. None of this would have been possible without the support of all of you who saw our story, shared it, and brought our story and our fight to national attention.” Eckardt chimed in, thanking God for their courage and acknowledging that many girls deserve recognition for their bravery.

Both athletes, who excelled in high school track and field and continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level, appeared on “Fox & Friends” to reflect on the significance of their award and its implications for their advocacy in women’s sports.

Anderson remarked on how unexpected the recognition was, stating, “Honestly, it was such an honor to receive this award. I never expected anything like this to happen when I stepped off the podium.” When she reflected on her decision to speak out, she asserted, “I think it was absolutely worth it.” She emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe and fair environment in women’s sports, indicating that this fight may continue for years to come. “If we can help all these girls, it will be extremely worthwhile,” she added.

Eckardt shared Anderson’s sentiments, feeling proud to stand up for women’s rights in sports and acknowledging the larger impact of their actions on future female athletes trying to compete.
