Oregon county prosecutor dismisses charges against reporter taken into custody during Portland demonstration

Oregon officials announced on Monday that they won’t be charging conservative journalist Nick Sort after he was arrested last week during a protest outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland. The incident escalated, drawing significant public attention.

Sort was seen in videos while in custody on Thursday and faced initial charges of second-degree disorderly conduct. He was released soon after, but the circumstances of his arrest—sparked by a confrontation with two individuals opposing the facility—were widely discussed online.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office has since stated it will not pursue charges due to a lack of evidence proving that any crime was committed. In a press release, they mentioned, “After careful consideration of the investigation, including reports and videos, we do not believe that beyond reasonable doubt we can prove a crime of disorderly conduct against Mr. Sort.” Interestingly, two other individuals arrested during the same event have been charged.

The press release emphasized gratitude for the Portland Police Department’s efforts in maintaining order amid the protests, which have been politically charged. The District Attorney’s Office assured a commitment to fair judicial processes.

Commenting on the outcome, Portland Police Chief Bob Day expressed appreciation for the thorough review conducted by the District Attorney’s Office. He explained that 36 arrests had been made since a surge in protests began back in June 2025 and reassured that law enforcement actions were based purely on legal grounds, not political motives.

Amidst these tensions, the Justice Department is reportedly investigating claims of bias against the Portland Police Department, following allegations made during the Trump administration.

In light of the current events, Sort suggested on social media that further legal action might be pursued, stating, “I’m still appearing at the Portland Judicial Center court at 2pm to finalize this, and I believe this is just the beginning.”
