Oregon State Advances to Orange Bowl with a 16-0 Win Over Texas Tech

Oregon State showcased a powerful defensive performance on Thursday, securing a 16-0 victory over Texas Tech to move forward to the Orange Bowl in the College Football Playoff at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Ducks’ defense was aggressive, forcing four turnovers and limiting Texas Tech to a mere 206 yards in total offense. Although the Red Raiders’ defense managed to keep them competitive with interceptions and crucial stops, it ultimately fell short.

In the first half, the game featured limited scoring. Oregon drove impressively on their initial possession, but an unfortunate sack on third down led to only a 50-yard field goal from Atticus Sappington, making the score 3-0.

The Ducks attempted to maintain their momentum, but once they reached the Red Raiders’ 23-yard line, they turned the ball over on downs. A later interception by Brandon Finney Jr. provided Oregon with a promising position at Texas Tech’s 35-yard line; however, the Red Raiders’ defense held again, leading to another Ducks punt.

Initially, Texas Tech struggled offensively, logging only nine yards in the first quarter. But they showed some life in the second, with running back Jay Coby Williams pulling off a notable 50-yard run into Oregon territory. Unfortunately, they could not capitalize on this momentum, and kicker Stone Harrington failed on a 54-yard field goal attempt, leaving the score at 3-0.

Oregon managed to move the chains, leading to a lengthy 14-play drive that ended just shy of the end zone, thanks to a resilient Texas Tech defense once more. A second field goal by Sappington, this time from 39 yards out, extended the Ducks’ lead to 6-0 just before halftime.

The third quarter saw Texas Tech gaining possession first, but they faltered quickly, going three-and-out. Oregon had another opportunity at midfield after their return, yet again fell victim to the Red Raiders’ defense on fourth down at the 33-yard line.

The Ducks’ defense created a turning point when Matayo Uiagalelei stripped Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton, recovering the fumble and setting up Oregon on the 6-yard line. Running back Jordon Davison capitalized on that with a 6-yard rushing touchdown, pushing Oregon’s lead to 13-0.

Texas Tech did manage to reach beyond midfield during their next drive, but the Ducks stifled their progress on fourth-and-1. Although Texas Tech intercepted Oregon’s Moore shortly after, giving them a flicker of hope, things went sideways again as Oregon’s defense made crucial plays, with Finney snagging another interception in the end zone.

In the final moments, Sappington added a field goal following the interception, sealing the score at 16-0.

Oregon State will now prepare to meet the winner of the Indiana vs. Alabama matchup in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
