Los Angeles Dodgers Suffer Historic Loss to Houston Astros

Orel Hershiser, a former pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, stirred up some controversy during Friday night’s game by referencing the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. This came in the wake of the Dodgers’ staggering 18-1 defeat at Dodger Stadium, marking the most significant loss in the stadium’s history.

The series opener was a tough pill to swallow for the Dodgers. Hershiser, now a broadcaster for the team, couldn’t help but draw comparisons to past infractions as he observed the Astros’ aggressive batting—maybe suggesting they were somehow forewarned about the pitches. After Astros’ outfielder Cam Smith hit a double against Dodgers rookie Ben Caspalius, Hershiser remarked, “I don’t want to open up old wounds, but in a way, they’re swinging these broken balls like they know what’s coming.”

Hershiser also recalled the controversial 2017 World Series, where the Astros defeated the Dodgers. Allegations later surfaced claiming that Houston utilized video technology to steal signs, relaying signals to batters by banging on trash cans.

During the game, Jose Altuve faced a chorus of boos and “con man” chants from the home crowd each time he came to bat. Despite the hostility, he excelled, reaching base five times and driving in five runs.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was quite candid about the situation. Reflecting on the night, he said, “Yeah, that was something I wanted to wash away as quickly as possible. I don’t think there’s been a lot of positives from this night.” Despite the loss, he seemed to find some solace in rookie Ben Caspalius’ performance, suggesting that the young pitcher did well even amidst the chaos.

Casaslius allowed six runs and nine hits, struggling significantly through three innings of play. With this disheartening defeat, Roberts indicated that Caspalius may return to the bullpen for the time being, emphasizing that improvement is necessary: “At the end of the day, he has to do a better job.”
