O’Rourke calls on Democrats to respond strongly in the redistricting struggle

O’Rourke Urges Democrats to Take a Stand Against GOP Redistricting

Former Representative Beto O’Rourke from Texas is calling for his fellow Democrats to adopt a more aggressive approach in response to Republican efforts to redraw congressional district boundaries in the state, gearing up for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.

During an interview with CNN discussing the concept of “Confederation Status,” O’Rourke emphasized the need for Democrats to engage in the same tactics as Republicans. He expressed concerns about Democrats focusing too much on being correct instead of gaining power.

“It’s time to fight fire with fire,” O’Rourke asserted. “Historically, Democrats seem more interested in being right than actually seizing power. On the contrary, Republicans are primarily focused on gaining power, no matter the implications for what’s right.”

In an unusual effort to connect with constituents during a mid-term period, Texas lawmakers are anticipated to review new congressional lines during a special session called by GOP Governor Greg Abbott. This redistricting effort aligns with President Trump’s request to bolster the narrow Republican majority as they head into the last two years of their current term.

In a call with Texas Republicans on Tuesday morning, Trump urged legislators to manipulate the districting process to convert five Democratic seats to Republican ones.

He also mentioned that similar strategies could be applied in traditionally blue states like New York and California to boost Democratic representation.

“I think we could secure five additional seats, while other states might gain three, four, or even five more,” Trump stated. “Texas will be the largest gain.”

O’Rourke, reflecting on his own political aspirations which include runs for Senate, Governor, and the Presidency, expressed admiration for California Governor Gavin Newsom and suggested that a similar strategy might be effective in California.

“Democrats seem overly concerned about being labeled as hypocrites, which has left them immobilized in this battle for power in America,” he noted. “But you don’t see Republicans worrying about that at all.”

“We need to push back. We can’t just roll over. We can’t accept defeat. We cannot give in to them.”
