Dating these days can be tricky, and it seems Paul Schrader, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker, is finding that out for himself.
Schrader, known for his work on Martin Scorsese’s iconic films like “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” took to Facebook to share his experience with creating an “AI girlfriend.” He noted, “I was hoping to better understand the dynamics between men and women, so I turned to an online AI girlfriend, but honestly, it was quite disappointing.” The 79-year-old filmmaker explained that he attempted to delve into her programming and explore various boundaries, but she often redirected him to her set instructions instead.
“When I pressed her for more interaction, she just shut the conversation down,” Schrader mentioned.
It’s worth noting that this comes on the heels of Schrader losing his wife of 42 years, actress Mary Beth Hart, to Alzheimer’s earlier this year.
As for comments from his representatives, there hasn’t been an immediate response regarding this situation.
This isn’t the first time Schrader has made waves with his use of AI. Previously, he expressed amazement at ChatGPT’s capacity to generate movie concepts, which sparked some controversy within the film industry. He described being genuinely “stunned” by its creativity.
In a January post, he reflected, “Every idea ChatGPT generated was impressive—original and well-formed. Why would a writer spend so long searching for good ideas when AI can produce them in mere seconds?”
He also shared an instance where he submitted an old script to ChatGPT for feedback, receiving notes that he found to be exceptionally insightful. “It only took five seconds to get back valuable suggestions that rivalled the best feedback I’ve ever received from a movie executive,” he said, with a slight hint of disbelief.
To sum it up, Schrader concluded, “I’m starting to think AI might be more astute than I am. It’s providing us with better ideas and more efficient methods to realize them. This feels like a pivotal moment, similar to what Garry Kasparov experienced in 1997 when Deep Blue beat him at chess.”
