Oscar Piastri is currently competing at the Miami Grand Prix, where he’s set on challenging Max Verstappen for the world driver championship title.
Piastri seems to be quite focused on the championship, even as many former F1 champions have turned to the IndyCar circuit. He made it clear on Saturday that he has no plans to participate in the Indy 500.
The McLaren driver expressed that racing in Formula 1 has always been his dream. He remarked, “Those people are crazy. For me, the speed… I think the wall is really close. You need a lot of trust in the people around you.” His concern about crashes in Formula 1 was evident as he added, “It hurts when we crash an F1 car at the speeds we go. We’re adding another 20 to 30 mph… They are going about 20 mph faster than our top speed on average. It’s not just about the risk of injury, but also how much it hurts.”
Piastri enters the Miami Grand Prix with a nine-point edge over his teammate Lando Norris. Verstappen, currently in third, trails Piastri by 19 points, with George Russell and Charles Leclerc rounding out the top five.
The iconic Indy 500 is happening on May 25th and will be broadcasted on Fox for the first time.
Several drivers, like Marcus Eriksson and Alexander Rossi, have had a background in Formula One, while others like Pato O’Ward and Felix Rosenqvist have experience in lower racing categories.
For the moment, Piastri’s main goal is to keep pushing both himself and the McLaren team towards the top of the Formula 1 standings.
