The Disney Grooming Syndicate, which owns ABC and Hulu, is coming to terms with reality in a way they hoped would never happen.
For 50 years, entertainment companies like Disney have earned billions of dollars in passive income from cable television. why? Because tens of millions of idiots (myself included) spend big bucks every month in the form of cable TV packages on shows we never watch. You may not like MTV. You may hate CNN. You may not be interested in ESPN. But if you're still stupid enough to subscribe to cable TV (or satellite TV), those networks are making money off of you in the form of transportation fees.
The cable package is the biggest thing to ever happen to Hollywood. These leftist multinational corporations have made billions of dollars from channels no one is watching.
Streaming is a direct threat to all of this. Not only are more people canceling their cable packages to stream, but streaming services are having to capitalize on their benefits to survive. Unlike cable TV, where Hollywood used to get paid for crap that no one was watching, streaming services have to attract customers as customers. Disney made billions on cable TV from people like me who never watched trash shows. But if Disney wants to make money from its streaming service, it needs to offer streaming content that people actually want to watch.
This means there's nothing Hollywood wants more than to save its cable rackets. That's where the real money is. It's not streaming. And one way they try to keep their cable rackets afloat is by refusing to stream the live shows that people love most, like sporting events and the Oscars. So…
The news that Disney Grooming Syndicate is venturing into streaming by broadcasting the Oscars live on Hulu is a big deal. It teaches us that there is no going back and that everything flows over time because there is a point.
You know, young people aren't interested enough in the Oscars to subscribe to cable TV. This means that if Disney wants young people to watch the Oscars, Disney must offer to host the Oscars online where young people are.
The real benefit here is that more and more live shows like the Oscars are available to stream for holdouts who still subscribe to cable TV, accelerating the transition to canceling cable and moving to streaming. All you have to do is do it.
But let me tell you what Hollywood's bigger fear is…it's all the free content you can stream. With so much free content streaming from Pluto, Tubi, RokuTV, FreeVee, and so many more, paying for a streaming service is a bit of a fool's errand.
Seriously, check out their services. You are already paying for the internet. All you need is a $60 Roku player and it's all there…and it's all free, so you don't have to line your groomer's pocket like Disney.
