The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences told the media that it wanted to avoid politics this year and that the safety and security of attendees was paramount.
Still, Oscar organizers said they do not require winners to keep politics out of their on-stage speeches.
If the Grammys are any indication, it’s going to be a prudent endeavor regardless. Some Grammy winners and presenters have made political messages on stage while in the spotlight.
Stars like Jay-Z and Annie Lennox have spent time promoting political positions. In fact, the show itself became political by featuring transgender singer Kim Petras, who received a standing ovation simply for being transgender.
