2026 Oscars Hosted by Conan O’Brien
Conan O’Brien took the stage at the Dolby Theater for the 2026 Oscars on Sunday, kicking off the night with a pointed comment on Hollywood’s ongoing issues with pedophilia.
Addressing a room full of celebrities, O’Brien noted, “This is the first time since 2012 that a British actor hasn’t been nominated for Best Actor or Best Actress.” He humorously added, “The British spokesperson said, ‘Well, at least we arrest pedophiles.’
No topic was too sensitive for the late-night host. He warned the audience, “Just to let you know, tonight might get political. If that makes you uneasy, there’s another Oscars hosted by Kid Rock down the street at Dave & Buster’s.”
O’Brien’s scripted humor combined with his on-the-spot commentary on various mishaps throughout the night. Despite being filled with Hollywood heavyweights, the show experienced several technical difficulties. Some acceptance speeches abruptly ended, leaving winners baffled as they ran out of time mid-sentence. Additionally, microphones often faded out despite the brevity of many speeches.
The host openly acknowledged the awkwardness, even putting his hands over his face during one particularly chaotic moment. But it wasn’t just O’Brien who made light of the situation.
Kieran Culkin, while announcing Sean Penn’s win for Best Supporting Actor for ‘One Battle After Another,’ took a jab at Penn’s absence. “Sean Penn couldn’t make it tonight, or chose not to come, so I’ll accept this award for him,” Culkin remarked.
Penn has a long and complicated history with award shows and public attention. He won against notable actors including Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Delroy Lindo, and Stellan Skarsgård.
