This year’s Oscars are seeing significantly increased security measures in light of heightened tensions and attacks related to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
On Sunday, officials confirmed that the 98th Academy Awards will implement a one-mile security perimeter that is said to be “better than ever.”
The ceremony, which will unfold at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood and be hosted by Conan O’Brien, includes activities like red carpet arrivals alongside a gala and a ball, not to mention the primetime ceremonies themselves.
According to LAPD Lt. Mike Brand, a specialized team named the Major Event Group is dedicated to ensuring the safety of significant events like the Oscars.
Brand stated, “We aim to continuously improve our plans for optimal outcomes.” He emphasized that they’ve prepared for possible challenges, with strategies in place to address them quickly and safely.
He also noted that this year’s Oscars will involve more personnel from the LAPD than ever before in almost a century.
In addition to the boost in staffing, authorities will implement a layered security system, along with a traffic management plan and heightened police visibility throughout Hollywood.
A designated security ring will restrict access to only certain individuals, while extensive road closures will affect the area.
Brand pointed out that this comprehensive approach to security has been in the works for several months, aimed at anticipating various challenges and ensuring the safety of attendees and visitors alike.
“We don’t want to disclose everything, but multiple divisions of the LAPD and specialized agencies will be on-site to oversee security,” he added.
Part of this strategy includes close collaboration with federal authorities.
Federal and local agencies will utilize the Joint Terrorism Task Force to keep track of social media and gather relevant intelligence.
Brand reassured that there are no known threats to Los Angeles or the Oscars at this time. “While there are no existing threats, our plan accounts for all potential dangers,” he remarked.
He also mentioned the necessity to stay informed of developments both domestically and abroad, noting, “We have based our approach on previous experiences and have increased our personnel accordingly.”
This will mark the third consecutive year that the LAPD’s Major Events Group will handle security for the Oscars.
