TAMPA — Oswaldo Peraza suffered a recurrence of soreness in his shoulder after playing Tuesday and Wednesday and will undergo imaging tests to determine the extent of the injury, Aaron Boone told the Post.
Peraza was seen leaving Steinbrenner Field in street clothes around noon Thursday as other players arrived for a workout and subsequent night game against the Tigers.
Boone said Peraza visited him Thursday morning and told him his shoulder was bothering him again.
The Yankees manager continued to say he did not realize the injury was serious.
Still, Peraza was sidelined from Feb. 25 until Tuesday due to shoulder tightness. He played second base on Tuesday and shortstop on Wednesday.
Brian Cashman did not respond to text messages regarding Peraza’s situation
Peraza, 23, was far from a roster spot even when healthy.
The Yankees have made it clear that he may be best suited for daily at-bats in Triple-A, rather than remaining as a utility infielder with few appearances in the majors.
But it’s clear that any further injury setbacks, even minor ones, will hurt his chances of making the Yankees’ roster.
Oswaldo Cabrera could be a backup infielder, and Kevin Smith remains in camp as a non-roster invitee, competing for that spot.
