DETROIT — Ben Simmons won’t play again for the Nets this season.
That begs the question of whether he will play for them again.
Brooklyn announced The oft-injured guard will miss the remainder of the campaign while he consults with specialists to find a treatment for a compressed nerve in his lower back.
Simmons, along with his agent Bernard Lee and Nets medical personnel, are currently consulting with a number of experts to determine a course of action that will provide him with the best opportunity for long-term sustainable health. the team said in a statement Thursday morning.
Just days ago, interim coach Kevin O’Ree hinted that Simmons could return at any time.
“He’s still taking it day-to-day, he’s still on the court, and hopefully he’ll be back soon and ready for the playoffs coming up in March and April,” O’Ree said.
Now even that hope has disappeared.

Simmons has appeared in just 57 of 179 games this season and missed 47 since the Nets acquired him at the 2022 trade deadline.
His $40 million salary expires next season, raising the question of whether the Nets will try to trade him this summer or even potentially buy him out.
