The Michigan Police Officers Association, the Great Lakes state's largest law enforcement group, endorsed Noem in a letter to Paul this month, saying police will have a harder job under the Biden administration as illegal immigrants move north and shake up the state. “We are sending troops to the border because it is a war zone,” Noem said in a February press release, marking the fifth time under the Biden administration that the National Guard has been sent to the border. “The primary mission of these soldiers is to build a wall to stop illegal immigration, drug cartels, and human trafficking from entering the United States.”

Noem has served as Mount Rushmore governor since 2019, drawing national attention and conservatives especially during the pandemic by opposing lockdown orders and mask mandates that were common in liberal states such as California and New York. It received praise from the community. Prior to becoming governor, Noem served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019.

Noem was meeting with senators on Capitol Hill this month to drum up support for her confirmation, including meeting with Paul.
