Outraged Citizens: Former Democratic Big City Mayor Criticizes Party's Completely Negative Communication

Outgoing Detroit Mayor Critiques Democrats’ Message

Mike Duggan, the outgoing independent mayor of Detroit, criticized the Democrats’ “negative” messaging strategy in a recent interview with Politico.

Duggan, who was a longtime Democrat, announced his candidacy as an independent for the December 2024 election. He is set to succeed Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who is term-limited. According to him, the party’s current messaging is overly pessimistic. “Everything Democrats are saying about Republicans is terrible,” he expressed. He pointed out the lack of constructive proposals from Democrats, saying they should instead present affordable housing and mental health treatment plans.

“It’s really frustrating to see the Democratic Party lose its way,” he added.

When asked about his independent run for governor, Duggan mentioned that his success stems from the fact that messages from both parties push people to hate the other side even more. He suggested that candidates aiming for the 2026 elections should aim to counteract this negative tone.

“Everywhere you go in this state, you find that people are angry at both sides,” he emphasized.

Duggan stated in a December 2024 post that he does not intend to run as a Democratic or Republican candidate. “I’m running for governor. Let’s put politics aside and put progress first,” he concluded.

An article from The Wall Street Journal highlighted a sentiment within the Democratic Party, suggesting they share agreement in their disdain for the Republican Party and Donald Trump. Duggan echoed this, stating that the party’s identity has become centered around this animosity.

In a more recent discussion, Duggan commented on New York’s political climate, mentioning that there seems to be a real desire for change among the populace. He remarked, “I think this shows how much people want change,” though he questioned whether specific policies were driving that sentiment.

Duggan is noted as one of the longest-serving mayors in Detroit’s history, having won significant re-election victories in both 2017 and 2021.

Looking ahead, the Republican candidates for Michigan governor in 2026 include several notable figures, while Democratic candidates feature Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist.
