Over 100 pro-life organizations urge Congressional Republicans to end taxpayer support for abortion via Obamacare

Pro-Life Coalition Urges Republicans to Oppose Obamacare Subsidy Extension

A group of over 100 pro-life organizations, spearheaded by Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, has reached out to Republican lawmakers, urging them to reject the extension of Obamacare subsidies unless they come with strong measures against taxpayer funding for elective abortions.

The coalition’s letter stresses adherence to the Hyde Amendment, a law from 1977 that forbids federal funding for the majority of abortions.

This letter was sent to members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and dates from October 22, 2025. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, established in 1992, aims to lead the pro-life movement with the same courageous spirit as its namesake.

“Democrats are holding up government funding unless Republicans agree to extend Biden’s subsidies from the pandemic era. However, funding Obamacare—whether it’s through cost-sharing reductions or premium tax credits—would mean taxpayer dollars could potentially fund abortions, unless those funds are clearly marked to exclude them,” the letter states.

Democrats recently blocked several Republican-sponsored urgent spending bills, prolonging a government shutdown for 22 days in the effort to keep Obamacare tax credits from expiring at the end of 2025.

“For over 40 years, the Hyde Amendment has shielded unborn children from being funded by taxpayer dollars. The implementation of Obamacare in 2010 marked a major shift from this policy, representing the largest expansion of abortion legislation since Roe v. Wade,” the letter continues.

The correspondence highlights an “accounting trick” termed the “abortion surcharge,” indicating that Section 1303 of Obamacare permits health insurance plans offered in its exchanges to cover elective abortions while still receiving taxpayer money, thanks to separate payment requirements designed to facilitate this funding.

“We, as pro-life leaders, implore you to strongly oppose any attempts to extend pandemic-era subsidies without Hyde protections. A pro-life Congress must not back an initiative that supports abortion funding,” the closing remarks of the letter emphasize.

Among the organizations endorsing the letter are the American College of Pediatrics, CatholicVote, Faith & Freedom Coalition, Jewish Pro-Life Foundation, Live Action, and March for Life Action, among others.

“Democrats continue to stall the government for what is essentially the most extensive taxpayer-funded abortion expansion since Roe v. Wade through Obamacare,” remarked SBA President Marjorie Dannenfelser in a statement. “This program forces taxpayers to subsidize insurance plans that pay for on-demand abortions. In the name of COVID relief, President Biden has exacerbated this issue by significantly increasing abortion subsidies.”

“The more funding Washington directs towards abortions, the more unborn lives are lost, and mothers are put at risk. This pro-life Congress should not extend the legacy of tax-funded abortions initiated by Obama and Biden that endanger so many innocent lives.”
