Over 600 CDC employees receiving final notices after actions from the Trump administration affected the agency

Recently, at least 600 employees from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been informed of their permanent termination due to a court ruling aimed at safeguarding certain CDC positions from layoffs.

This week, the Federation of US Government Employees reported that layoff notifications were sent out, though many employees are still awaiting their individual notices.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) refrained from sharing specific details regarding the layoffs and previously mentioned that restructuring was necessary to enhance the responsiveness and efficiency of health agencies.

Officials from the union confirmed the layoffs of approximately 600 CDC workers, yet they indicated that they haven’t received official information on who has been let go, attributing this to a “serious lack of transparency” from HHS.

The permanent layoffs comprise around 100 individuals from violence prevention sectors. Some employees expressed discontent, pointing out the contradiction of cutting staff trained to handle violence prevention, especially in light of recent tragic incidents on the CDC campus.

“It’s ironic and quite troubling. The very professionals skilled in tackling this sort of violence are being sidelined,” remarked some of the affected workers in a recent blog.

On April 1, notices were dispatched to thousands of CDC and other federal health agency employees regarding layoffs.

As lawsuits progress, many of those impacted have been placed on administrative leave, receiving pay but not being allowed to work.

A judge in Rhode Island recently issued a preliminary ruling protecting certain employee groups within the CDC, namely those working in areas like smoking cessation, reproductive and environmental health, workplace safety, birth defects, and sexually transmitted diseases.

However, this legal protection does not extend to all CDC employees, and layoffs in other departments, including the Information Bureau, have been confirmed.

Employees were made aware that their termination was effective as of Monday.

The projects affected included initiatives aimed at preventing rape, child abuse, and dating violence among teenagers.

The terminated staff played vital roles in assisting other nations tackle issues related to violence against children. In a meeting back in November, discussions were held about setting goals for reducing violence.

“It’s unsettling to witness the downfall of the CDC’s Science Program,” reflected Tom Simon, a retired director from the CDC’s Violence Prevention Science Program.
