The number of adult Americans who would choose to live in another country if possible has tripled, according to a Monmouth University poll.

The latest Monmouth University national poll released Wednesday noted a sharp increase in the desire to leave the United States among adults.

Approximately 34% of respondents to the poll said they would “settle in another country” if it was logistically possible.

By political leaning, independents were the most likely to say they wanted to leave the United States, with 41% of respondents answering in the affirmative.

About 35% of Democrats said they would like to settle elsewhere, as did 22% of Republicans.

The poll did not ask respondents which country they would like to resettle in, but it did ask which country they would like to travel to.

The country most frequently cited as a place they would like to travel to is Italy (18%), followed by the UK (10%) and Japan (8%).

The Monmouth University poll was conducted from February 8 to February 12, 2024. The poll was conducted using a probability-based random sample of 902 adults nationwide via landline, cell phone, and text invitations.
