For a quick breakfast, Nelson Serrano Bari, chef and innovation director at the American Egg Board in Chicago, Illinois, recommends topping this French toast with fresh berries, powdered sugar, and maple syrup.
“Mixing the berries with mint or other fresh herbs really enhances the flavor of this dish,” he says.

- 8 large eggs
- 2 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Cube or tear the sourdough bread, then form an even layer into the bottom of a baking dish and pour the spice and milk mixture on top. (iStock)

- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups fresh berries, such as strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries

1. Coat a 9×13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and arrange bread crumbs or cubes evenly in prepared dish.
2. In a medium bowl, add the eggs, milk, sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt. Whisk to combine and pour over the bread. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
