Oversight Committee considers all possibilities for Biden's testimony

Republicans Consider Summoning Biden for Oversight Investigation

Republicans on the House Oversight Committee are still weighing their options regarding whether to call former President Joe Biden and former First Lady Jill Biden to testify. This comes as part of a broader inquiry into allegations that signs of the president’s mental decline may have been concealed during his administration.

Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, stated, “All options are on the table. We’re seeking answers and aiming to move quickly.” When asked specifically about the possibility of bringing in the former president, he confirmed that the committee would discuss the next steps and potential witnesses.

Florida Representative Byron Donald clarified that while he advocates for a higher-profile witness, he is expressing his personal views rather than those of the entire committee.

Comer has dismissed any requests from Biden’s physician to pause the investigation, asserting the need to eliminate “all excuses” relevant to the probe.

Donald is adamant about summoning any and all Biden administration members, stating, “I don’t care if they were secretaries or not. They all need to come in and answer the questions.” When questioned about including the former First Lady in this demand, he responded affirmatively.

During a recent closed deposition involving Jill Biden’s longtime aide, Anthony Bernal, Donald highlighted Bernal’s critical role, saying, “If he invokes the Fifth, the former First Lady should also come to answer questions.”

As the investigation heats up, Donald has remarked that he previously had no concerns about Biden’s mental state but is now prompted to reconsider.

Comer is exploring claims that Biden’s aides reportedly concealed evidence of his declining mental and physical health during his presidency, as well as whether certain actions were taken using an autopen without Biden’s knowledge. Allies of Biden have countered these allegations.

In a recent interview, Biden maintained that he “made all the decisions.” The ongoing investigation has already seen three former aides testify, with Bernal being among them. Notably, Bernal, who has invoked the Fifth Amendment, joined former White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor in this legal protection. Additionally, former Deputy Chief of Staff Annie Tomasini has also been indicated as a potential witness through her legal team.

Comer and Donald continue to emphasize that invoking the Fifth Amendment shouldn’t be equated with an admission of guilt, though Donald expressed surprise at the move.
