Oversight Committee to meet with Bowser and DC leaders in September

Hearing Planned in Response to Trump’s Control of DC

James Kommer, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, announced plans for a hearing in September involving Washington, D.C. officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, Speaker Phil Mendelson, and Attorney General Brian Schwarb. This follows President Trump’s recent decision to revoke federal oversight of the city.

Kommer stated, “In partnership with President Trump, the House Oversight Committee aims to find legislative solutions to safeguard Americans in the capital. We look forward to our discussions with Attorney General Schwarb, DC Council President Mendelson, and Mayor Bowser next month.” He added that the committee is committed to fulfilling its constitutional duty in overseeing D.C. while collaborating with the Trump administration to ensure the capital remains safe and thriving.

On Monday, Trump revealed plans not only to take control of police stations in the city but also to deploy the National Guard to combat rising crime. He also declared a state of public safety emergency for the district.

“Our capital has been overrun by violent gangs, dangerous criminals, unrest among the youth, rampant drug issues, and homelessness. We refuse to allow this to continue,” Trump emphasized.

According to the Home Rules Act, Trump has the authority to temporarily take control of police stations if he identifies urgent conditions.

There remains some uncertainty regarding any coordination with D.C. officials; a spokesperson for Mayor Bowser’s office refrained from commenting just before Trump’s address.

In reaction to Trump’s announcement, DC Ward 6 Councillor Charles Allen criticized it as “dangerous.” He remarked on social media, “It is inappropriate for the President to take control of the local police and place U.S. troops in the streets of D.C. in the name of public safety.”
