Owner of Dodgers and Lakers involved in surprising $16 billion scandal

A federal investigation into billionaire Mark Walter, known for owning the Los Angeles Lakers and Dodgers, dates back to concerns raised by one of his employees. This whistleblower reported suspicious patterns in revenue reporting.

Prosecutors are looking into allegations that billions of dollars in profits were funneled into accounts belonging to insurance companies.

Reports indicate that the employees’ tip-off was crucial in initiating the investigation.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan, in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Commission, is examining how approximately $16 billion in loans to Walter’s TWG Global were transferred through intermediaries before appearing on the insurance companies’ balance sheets.

Authorities are assessing whether Walter or his company did anything illegal.

However, TWG Global maintains that it has done nothing wrong, with a spokesperson emphasizing Walter’s honesty and integrity. They expressed confidence that the situation will be resolved positively.

TWG Global is fully cooperating with the investigation, which Walter’s company acknowledged in a regulatory filing made earlier this year.

This investigation coincides with a broader regulatory scrutiny on private lenders, which has been a setback for traditional banks.

Mr. Walter heads a life insurance firm that is integral to the private credit landscape.

With an estimated net worth of $7.3 billion, according to Forbes, Walter has established himself in the sports industry after a successful career on Wall Street. He co-founded Guggenheim Partners, which plays a role in the financial sector, including insurance acquisitions, before creating TWG Global, focused on investments in sports and other sectors.

Walter’s involvement extends to franchises like the Dodgers, Lakers, and Chelsea, as well as the WNBA’s LA Sparks and investments in both the Billie Jean King Cup and Cadillac F1 teams.

TWG Global markets itself as a “unique holding company” that strategically invests in various sectors including investment management, technology, finance, and media.
