Potential Sale of OnlyFans for $8 Billion
The owners of OnlyFans, a popular subscription platform known for adult content, are reportedly in talks to sell the UK-headquartered business for approximately $8 billion (£5.9 billion).
The discussions involve Fenix International, the platform’s owner, and a consortium led by the US investment firm Forest Road Company (FRC).
Fenix is owned by Leonid Radvinsky, a 43-year-old entrepreneur of Ukrainian-American descent. Since 2020, he has received close to $1.3 billion in dividends from his highly profitable ventures.
OnlyFans boasts more than 4 million registered creator accounts, allowing creators to charge subscribers for access to their content. The revenue split on the platform is structured at 80/20. Users can engage with a vast array of content, from popular performers’ videos to messaging options.
While OnlyFans hosts diverse material, including comedy and lifestyle, it is most associated with adult content, enforcing a strict age requirement of 18 and older.
In the latest accounts, OnlyFans reported revenues of $1.3 billion up until November 30, 2023, reflecting a 20% increase from the previous year. Additionally, pre-tax profits grew by 25% to reach $658 million.
The number of both creator and fan accounts has surged by nearly 30%, with content creators earning about $6.6 billion in 2023.
Keely Blair, the CEO of OnlyFans, emphasized that the company has established itself as a significant player in digital entertainment and a notable success story in UK technology.
OnlyFans declined to comment, whereas FRC was also reached for a statement.
Radvinsky has explored other potential buyers, being the first to disclose the acquisition discussions, according to reports. There are indications that going public may not be a viable option at this time.
OnlyFans was initially founded by Tim Stokely in 2016, with financial support from his father’s banking background. Radvinsky acquired the company in 2018. Not much information is available about Radvinsky, who, according to his personal website, holds an economics degree from a US university and resides in Florida. Prior to his involvement with OnlyFans, he ran an adult webcam business.
In March, UK communication regulators fined Fenix £1 million for not adequately addressing requests for information regarding age verification measures on the platform, especially the requirement for facial estimation technology to confirm users’ ages based on selfies.
Ofcom stated that Fenix was a significant player that “fully recognizes its regulatory obligations,” suggesting that the company should have taken steps to prevent such failures.
