Oxford Union Criticizes President-Elect for Celebrating Kirk's Death

Oxford Union Distances Itself from Controversial Remarks

The Oxford Union, a historic debate association known globally, has taken a step back from its own electoral process after allegations surfaced regarding comments made in response to the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Founded in 1823, the Union has hosted prominent figures, including presidents and thought leaders, and it has now publicly condemned the reaction to Kirk’s death.

George Abarany, who was elected president of the Union, reportedly made comments that included phrases like “Charlie Kirk was shot, let’s try again.” These remarks have drawn widespread condemnation, and it appears that at least one of them has been removed since they gained attention.

Interestingly, these remarks come just months after Abarany engaged in a discussion with Kirk about masculinity and the alarming rates of male suicide in Western societies, during which Kirk remarked on Abarany’s thought-provoking questions.

In light of the unfiltered comments about Kirk’s assassination that surfaced from Utah, leaders within the Oxford Union clarified their disassociation with Abarany, asserting that the current administration firmly rejects his statements.

They stated, “The Oxford Coalition wants to clearly condemn the reported words and feelings expressed by President-elect George Abarany regarding the passing of Charlie Kirk.”

The statement continued, highlighting the Union’s stance: “We oppose all forms of political violence and remain committed to fostering a culture of free speech and empathy. We extend our condolences to Charlie Kirk’s family.”

Abarany had won the presidency earlier this year and had shared his intentions to lead the organization towards rebuilding trust after witnessing divisions within the group’s discussions, emphasizing the importance of balance and joy in the debate space.

In a light-hearted turn, he even proposed inviting UK rapper Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and personalities like LeBron James to engage in discussions at the Union.
