Magic Johnson, the iconic figure of the Los Angeles Lakers, has become the subject of a few jokes lately due to his seemingly ordinary posts on social media.
But it’s not his frequent updates that are raising eyebrows; it’s what he hasn’t shared. Award-winning journalist Pablo Torre recently wrapped up a significant investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard, which led to some impactful revelations.
Now, Torre is shifting his focus to the Los Angeles Dodgers and their owner, Mark Walter, who stands accused of possibly committing fraud through his insurance firms. Of interest is EquiTrust Life Insurance Company, which Magic Johnson purchased from Walter back in 2014, contributing to Johnson’s billionaire status.
Interestingly, EquiTrust had also offered a whopping $350 million loan to Walter’s media firm, something that has caught Torre’s attention. He discussed it in an episode of “Pablo Torre Finds Out” that aired recently.
“You’d assume that with such a large deal, Magic Johnson might want to celebrate becoming a billionaire, right? Despite posting about almost everything else in his life, he hasn’t mentioned the sale of EquiTrust once,” noted Sam Koppelman, a guest on Torre’s show.
This sale to Amistad Financial occurred in November 2025. Amistad is led by Eric Holoman, who has been Johnson’s business partner for many years and previously served as the president of Magic Johnson Enterprises. After the sale, Holoman took on the role of “managing founder” at Amistad.
“It’s quite noticeable, especially considering how frequently Johnson tweeted about EquiTrust and Holoman in the past,” Torre remarked.
Koppelman agreed, acknowledging the oddity of Johnson’s silence regarding this transaction. Torre views Johnson’s lack of posts about the sale as a potential red flag, especially given his usual social media activity.
Torre has reached out to Magic Johnson’s team but hasn’t gotten any response so far. It seems like there’s more to unfold in this story.
