Pacers and Mercury players create the latest brother-sister pair in the NBA and WNBA

McConnell Family’s Big Week in Basketball

This week is significant for the McConnell family. Pacers guard TJ McConnell is making his way to the NBA Finals, while his sister, Megan McConnell, has just debuted in the WNBA.

Megan, who was undrafted, secured a spot on the Phoenix Mercury Training Camp roster and signed a seasonal contract. She made her WNBA debut on Tuesday, scoring three points and providing three assists in 13 minutes, though she suffered a knee injury during the game. Unfortunately, this means she’s already been ruled out for Thursday’s match against the Golden State Valkyries.

Megan McConnell’s Journey from Duquesne University to Phoenix Mercury

Megan was a standout player at Duquesne University, where she averaged 18.4 points, shot 46.9%, grabbed 7.2 rebounds, and dished out five assists in her senior year, making her the second-highest scorer in the program’s history.

In a recent press release, she shared her excitement about receiving the invitation to try out for the Mercury. “Honestly, when I got the call from my agent, I was in disbelief,” she mentioned. “He told me Phoenix was eager about me, and I was thrilled to accept the invitation. I can’t wait to prove that I belong there.”

Though she faced being cut at the end of training camp, the Mercury officially signed her to their roster on Tuesday.

“Megan worked incredibly hard to earn her place in the WNBA,” said Duquesne head coach Danbert. “This opportunity is well-deserved, and I’m delighted to see such a talented young woman succeed.”

TJ McConnell Set for NBA Finals Debut

As Megan adapts to her new WNBA journey, her brother, TJ McConnell, is preparing to play in the NBA Finals for the first time on Thursday against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

TJ, a crucial player for the Pacers, averaged 9.1 points with a shooting percentage of 51.9% and contributed 4.4 assists during the regular season, solidifying his role as a leader of the team’s bench unit.

His performance in the Eastern Conference Finals has also been noteworthy, with multiple double-digit games and an average of 8.4 points per game this postseason.

The McConnell family has a rich basketball tradition, with their aunt Susie McConnell being a revered WNBA figure and a Hall of Famer. Now, Megan is stepping up to continue that legacy.
