Packers parting ways with Jaire Alexander to resolve contract disagreement

Jaire Alexander Released by Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers have officially released cornerback Jaire Alexander, who has been a pivotal player for the team. This news was highlighted by two Pro Bowlers early Monday morning.

At 28 years old, Alexander faced a tough run in the 2023-24 seasons, managing to participate in just 14 games primarily due to injuries. After November 17 of the past season, he was sidelined and ultimately placed on injured reserve, undergoing knee surgery. His injury woes included both shoulder and knee setbacks, along with a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

In 2022, he signed a lucrative four-year, $22 million contract extension. As the offseason approaches, discussions regarding potential trade options have arisen, amid considerations for restructuring contracts and reducing payroll for the next season.

While it seems Alexander may have hesitated to adjust his contract, the decision to part ways now appears imminent.

Before the injuries, Alexander was frequently regarded as one of the top defensive backs since joining the Packers as a first-round draft pick in 2018. His accolades include his first Pro Bowl appearance in 2020 and receiving the second-team All-Pro honor in both 2020 and 2022.

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst voiced the team’s frustration over Alexander’s challenges with injuries, noting, “It’s tough when a player who’s been so impactful in the past can’t consistently contribute on the field. It’s a challenge for everyone involved.”

The Packers also had financial complexities regarding Alexander, having borrowed $17.5 million for 2025 and $19.5 million for 2026. However, with his release, they can save approximately $17 million against the salary cap this season and an additional $27 million in 2026, although they will incur $7.5 million in dead money for the 2025 cap and another $9.5 million from this June release impacting the 2026 cap.
