Padres Face Tough Loss Against Orioles

The San Diego Padres suffered not just a defeat to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, but they might also have lost a key player for the season. Relief pitcher Jason Adam experienced pain during the seventh inning of the team’s 4-3 loss at Petco Park.

The game was tied at 3-3 with one out and a runner on base when Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson hit a weak grounder towards the mound. Adam attempted to play the ball but quickly collapsed. Padres shortstop Jose Iglesias fielded the ball, but Henderson made it to first safely.

Immediately after the play, Adam signaled for assistance from the dugout. “I felt a pop and thought it was a quad. So, yeah, I knew something wasn’t right,” Adam later shared with reporters while sporting a brace on his left leg.

He explained, “I went to plant my foot and grab the ball, but it just didn’t end well.” The 34-year-old was eventually helped off the field, drawing a standing ovation from the crowd. In his absence, fellow All-Star Robert Suarez took the mound but struggled, allowing a run that tipped the game in the Orioles’ favor.

Adam reflected on the injury’s impact, noting that missing a potential World Series run is particularly hard to bear. “I think that’s the most difficult part,” he said. “You want to be part of a team that’s got what it takes.” He added that while healing is important, he still wants to be there for his team in any way he can.

He’ll undergo an MRI for further evaluation. Adam has been a standout relief pitcher for the Padres this season, holding an impressive ERA of 1.93 in 66 games, and his performance has been integral to the Padres’ relatively solid bullpen.

Padres manager Mike Schilt praised Adam as a vital member of the team. Looking ahead, the Padres are grappling with their recent losses and working to close the gap on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West standings.

With a record of 76-62, the Padres are chasing after two straight losses, hoping to bounce back against the Orioles in the second game of their series on Tuesday night.
