Paige Bueckers’ fate may have just been decided at WNBA Draft Lottery

Here's the result: The Dallas Wings will have the No. 1 pick in 2025. WNBA draft. That means they are likely to take Paige Bueckers, a star at the University of Connecticut who was named National Player of the Year as a freshman and has since established herself as a great two-way point guard. This season, the Buccaneers are averaging 21.3 points on 65 percent shooting, four assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Paige Backers is currently the frontrunner for the No. 1 pick, but she's not the only option. Kiki Iliafen, a high-scoring forward from the University of Southern California, could also be among the top candidates.

3rd place: Chicago Sky

4th place: Washington Mystics

5th place: Golden State Valkyries

6th place: Washington Mystics (from Dream)

7th place: New York Liberty (via Mercury)

8th place: Indiana Fever

9th place: Seattle Storm

No. 10: Chicago Sky (via Sun)

11th place: Minnesota Lynx

No.12: Phoenix Mercury (via Liberty)

The WNBA Draft is scheduled to be held on Monday, April 14, after the 2024-25 NCAA basketball season.

Heading into the lottery, the Sparks had the best odds for first place (44.2%) as they had the worst cumulative record of 22-55 over the past two seasons. The Wings and Sky each had a 22.7% chance of getting the No. 1 pick, but because the Wings traded picks with the Sky, their odds of getting the No. 1 pick actually became 45.4%. The Mystics had a slim chance of finishing first, finishing with a 10.4% chance. In the end, the results perfectly reflected the lottery odds.

Each lottery team's representative player was a young star player. Rikea Jackson represented the Sparks, Aaliyah Edwards represented the Mystics, Maddie Siegrist represented the Wings, and Angel Reese represented the Sky.

The Indiana Fever has had the past two No. 1 picks. They drafted Aliyah Boston in 2023 and Kaitlyn Clark in 2024. The duo helped lead the Fever to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Fudd may choose to return to college next season, so depending on that decision, she may not participate in this year's draft. Tankasson Mock Draft Sonia Citron (Notre Dame), Shan'Ann Sellers (Maryland), Ajisa Shibuka (Schio), Lori Harmon (Texas) and Georgia Amoore (Kentucky) are all expected to advance to the first round.

But this season will speak volumes. Some players, like Fudd, have an extra year available due to COVID-19 and injuries and may or may not choose to enter this year's draft. Other players, like LSU's Frauge Johnson, are not currently scheduled to enter the draft, but could choose to enter the draft early if they continue to dominate this season.
