Finnish lawmaker appeals hate speech conviction to European Court of Human Rights
A Finnish lawmaker, Paivi Rassenen, is making headlines after her conviction for hate speech in Finland. She, along with Kristen Wagoner, the CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom, discussed the implications of Rassenen’s case. The charges stem from a pamphlet she published in 2004, which presented her Christian views on marriage. Rassenen, a member of Finland’s parliament and former interior minister, recently learned that her previously approved travel authorization to the UK was unexpectedly revoked. This cancellation has raised concerns among advocates for religious freedom regarding potential repercussions of her ruling. Rassenen planned to speak at an event in Northern Ireland next month but is now uncertain about her travel arrangements.
In a screenshot shared, the UK Government noted, “The information you provided on your ETA application suggests that you are not eligible for an ETA, and your ETA has been cancelled.” This unexpected development has left Rassenen in a difficult position.
Rassenen recounted her experiences to Fox News Digital, explaining that her travel authorization application initially received a positive response but later faced withdrawal. After being convicted for a 2004 booklet detailing Biblical perspectives on marriage, she has decided to challenge this conviction at the European Court of Human Rights.
In a recent statement, Rassenen expressed her concerns about how this ruling affects not just her but many others who may feel anxious about exercising their freedoms. She highlighted the convictions imposed, which also include Lutheran Bishop Juhana Pojola, emphasizing the broader implications of this situation.
Despite the setbacks, Rassenen expressed hope that these challenges are part of a greater plan. With a history of collaboration with the UK through parliamentary efforts, she’s keen to represent her views on free speech during her planned visit. While she’s reached out for clarity from the UK Home Office regarding her travel status, she has yet to receive a response.
Senior legal adviser Lorcan Price from Alliance Defending Freedom remarked on the denials faced by Rassenen, pointing out that these actions suggest a growing tendency towards suppression of dissenting voices. The coincidence of her cancellation, particularly considering she was to speak on religious freedom, accentuates the troubling nature of the situation.
