Peshawar:
A Pakistani journalist was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday in the country’s restive northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to the Tribal Journalists Association.
Khalil Jibran, a Pashto-language news channel affiliated with Khyber News, was shot dead near his home in Mazrina Sultankhel area of Khyber province.
One more person, identified as Sajid, was also injured in the firing.
The assailants fled the scene after killing the journalist.
Police forces were on their way to the scene of the shooting, sources said.
The Mazrina area of the tribal region is a hotbed of militancy. Family sources confirmed Jibran’s killing, and a senior journalist claimed it was a targeted killing.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur condemned the killing of the senior tribal journalist and ordered the immediate arrest of those involved.
The Electronic Media Editors Association condemned the murder and demanded the arrest of the culprits.
The Khyber Union of Journalists and Peshawar Press Club also urged the provincial government to take appropriate measures for the protection and safety of journalists.
