Pakistan has received a second installment of special drawing rights (SDRs) amounting to $1.023 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of the Expansion Fund Facility (EFF) program, according to the central bank’s statement on Wednesday.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced on X that this amount will be included in the Forex Reserve for the week ending May 16th.
Recently, the IMF authorized immediate spending of roughly $1 billion for Pakistan under the ongoing EFF, facilitating further arrangements for an additional $1.4 billion through resilience and sustainability facilities (RSF).
Last Friday, the IMF communicated that its Executive Committee had completed the initial review of Pakistan’s economic reform initiatives supported by the EFF arrangement.
“This decision enables immediate disbursements of about $1 billion (SDR 760 million), bringing total payments to nearly $2.1 billion (SDR 152 million). Moreover, the Executive Committee approved the authorities’ request for access under the RSF, amounting to roughly $140 million (SDR 1BN),” the statement noted.
It was highlighted that Pakistan’s policy efforts under the EFF have made “significant advances” in stabilizing the economy and rebuilding trust amid a challenging global landscape.
“Fiscal performance is robust, achieving a primary surplus of 2% of GDP in the first half of FY2025, with Pakistan on track to meet its ultimate goal of 2.1% of GDP.”
“In April, inflation dropped to an unprecedented low of 0.3%. With developmental progress and stable domestic and external conditions, the Pakistan Bank has been able to lower its policy rate by 1,100 bps since June 2025, aiming for reconstruction in the medium term.”
On another note, the RSF is designed to bolster the government’s efforts to decrease vulnerability to natural disasters and enhance economic and climate resilience.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office indicated that Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif expressed satisfaction regarding the “failure of India’s hearing tactics” against Pakistan.
“The economic situation in our country is improving, and we are progressing towards development. India is attempting to divert attention from our advancements through unilateral actions.”
“International organizations are justified in refusing to falsely promote India. India’s efforts to undermine the IMF program have been unsuccessful,” the Prime Minister was quoted as saying.
