Pakistan Offers Restricted Bail to Former Islamist PM Imran Khan, Sparkling Hopes for His Freedom

Hope for Imran Khan’s Release as Supreme Court Accepts Bail Plea

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has sparked optimism among supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan by accepting his bail plea concerning eight of the various charges against him.

Khan, who is now 72, served as prime minister from August 2018 until his ousting in April 2022 due to a no-confidence vote. Since then, he has faced over 100 allegations related to corruption and misuse of power, hindering his efforts at a political comeback.

Khan was arrested in August 2023 on corruption charges. His brief period of immunity ended when supporters gathered at his residence, preventing law enforcement from detaining him. During his time in custody, numerous charges were leveled against him.

The public reaction to Khan’s arrest was significant. Massive protests ensued, leading to violence that resulted in casualties and multiple arrests, including many of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party associates. The military’s intelligence apparatus has reportedly been involved, particularly when supporters clashed with military property.

Khan sought bail regarding the eight cases stemming from the 2023 riots; however, his request was initially denied by a Counter Terrorism Court in Lahore last November. The Lahore High Court also rejected his appeal in June 2025, but the Supreme Court overturned this decision and granted him bail on Thursday.

Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Talar expressed disappointment over the celebrations among PTI supporters, emphasizing that Khan is still undergoing a trial and suggesting his release from prison may not be imminent.

“It’s perplexing to see such joy over gaining bail. Does this mean absolvement? I think not,” Talar remarked.

This week, Army Secretary Asim Munir further dampened Khan’s prospects, stating that he should apologize for the violence of May 9 and “stay quiet.”

Supporters of Khan interpreted these comments as further evidence of military persecution, fearing a systematic effort to dismantle the PTI.

“The message is unmistakable. Khan can only remain in politics if he renounces his assertive stance. This isn’t solely about legal matters; it’s about silencing him,” noted an Islamabad political analyst.

Munir suggested that Khan could perhaps find peace in remaining silent at home for the foreseeable future. Both Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, issued statements alleging mistreatment while detained in Rawalpindi prison.

Khan revealed that he has been held in “total isolation,” restricted from seeing his family or legal team. His wife reported suffering from electric shocks and visible injuries due to insect bites, along with claims of inhumane treatment and inadequate medical care.

“To my nation, supporters, and party leaders, I want to say that I remain resolute and undaunted,” Khan conveyed in a social media post. “I’m not afraid.” He has vehemently opposed the charges against him, labeling them as acts of oppression following the alleged “false” riots in May 2023.

“We must stand firm against this onslaught of tyranny,” Khan asserted. “Even confined, I am fighting for my country’s genuine freedom and will remain steadfast until others are free from their chains.”
