Possible Peace Deal Between U.S. and Iran Imminent
According to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the United States and Iran might finalize a peace agreement within the next day. Sharif has been actively involved in mediating the discussions over the past several weeks.
In a message posted early Saturday, the prime minister expressed optimism, stating, “We are closer to a peace deal than ever before. With finalization likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical level talks next week.” He also expressed gratitude to both the U.S. and Iran for their dedication during the negotiations, and he appreciated support from regional allies. He believes this peace deal could lay the groundwork for lasting stability.
Sharif previously helped navigate a ceasefire deal in early April, which followed President Donald Trump’s threatening comments about targeting Iranian infrastructure, suggesting potential devastating consequences for Iran. That ceasefire was only supposed to last two weeks, but negotiations have extended well beyond that period. Trump raised concerns about internal conflicts within Iran, which he indicated complicated diplomatic efforts.
On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi noted that the tentative deal demonstrated Iran’s success in the ongoing conflict, claiming, “Iran is the winner of the war with the U.S.”
Shortly after his comments, U.S. forces intercepted and shot down several Iranian drones aimed at the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route that Iran has previously threatened. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that all attempted drone strikes were neutralized, allowing commercial traffic through the corridor to continue without interruption.
The Trump administration remains steadfast in its objectives to keep the Strait of Hormuz accessible for oil shipments and to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapon capabilities, which are viewed as non-negotiable points in any prospective agreement.
