The annual Holocaust remembrance event at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp took place on Monday, with protests by activists carrying Palestinian flags, confronting protesters and shouting.
Thousands of people attended the 36th March of the Living event on Monday. Usually it’s a silent march from Auschwitz to Birkenau. Birkenau was a German concentration camp built in occupied Poland during World War II and was a major site of the Holocaust.Among those detained at Auschwitz yesterday were German die welt broadsheet newspaper report55 Holocaust survivors, survivors of the October 7 Israeli massacre, and relatives of Hamas hostages.
Palestinian activists protested the march, shouting slogans and some marchers were confronted. March organizers said counter-demonstrators saw the event as a “perverse” opportunity to “express their hatred of Israel and the Jewish people.” They said this would serve as a “timely reminder of the importance of Holocaust education and remembrance.”

Omar Faris, an organizer of the counter-protest, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying: An end to war, an end to genocide. ”

According to the paper, demonstrators accused Israel of inciting “another genocide” and shouted, “Aren’t you ashamed of what your government is doing?”
