Palestinian Authority Government ‘Resigns’ in Fake Display of Reform for U.S.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) government on Monday made a hollow gesture of resignation, with the notable exception of President Mahmoud Abbas, to ease pressure from the United States for “reforms” as a condition of post-war governance of Gaza.

CNN I got it.:

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh and his government announced Monday that he has submitted his resignation.

A government dominated by the Fatah party ruled the Gaza Strip until 2007, after Hamas won parliamentary elections in the occupied territory in 2006 and was expelled from the strip. Israel rejects the possibility of the Palestinian Authority returning to Gaza after the war, and also rejects the idea of establishing a Palestinian state in the area.

However, the US supports a reformed PA controlling both the West Bank and Gaza as part of a future independent state.

In effect, the resignation is just a façade, as Mr Abbas remains in charge of the PA.

President Abbas was elected in 2005 and is currently in the 20th year of his first four-year term. The PA is considered corrupt by Palestinians and distrusted by Israelis. Notably, the PA has failed to condemn the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack. Said The attack should be forgotten and the Fatah party, which runs the PA, said it was ready for “unity” with Hamas.

President Joe Biden has said he wants the PA to return to post-war Gaza in a governing capacity. Although Israel opposes the idea, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not explicitly rule it out in his postwar Gaza plan presented to his cabinet.

The PA government’s resignation is an effort to help the Biden administration implement its vision for post-war Gaza, and Hamas’s role no longer appears to be ruled out.
