Palestinian Officials Refused Visas to Enter the U.S.

Visa Denial for Palestinian Leaders Ahead of UN Assembly

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Friday that the United States has “denied and revoked” visas for senior Palestinian officials who are set to attend the upcoming UN General Assembly next month.

The reason is that Palestinian leaders have allegedly violated U.S. laws and policies by indicating their plans to declare a Palestinian state without reaching a negotiated settlement with Israel to resolve long-standing disputes.

In July, it was reported that the entry ban for Palestinian leaders was likely after President Trump imposed sanctions on Palestinian authorities over national issues.

As stated by the State Department, Rubio elaborated on the situation:

Consistent with U.S. law, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has rejected and revoked visas for members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA) ahead of the forthcoming UN General Assembly. The Trump administration has been clear that it is in our national security interest to hold these bodies accountable for failing to uphold their commitments, which undermines the chances for peace.

Before the PLO and PA can be recognized as partners in peace, they must decisively reject terrorism—including the tragic events of October 7th—and stop promoting terrorism in their educational systems, as required by U.S. law and their agreements. Additionally, the PA needs to halt efforts to avoid negotiations through international legal routes, including appeals to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and actions aimed at gaining unilateral recognition of a potential Palestinian state. These factors have significantly impacted Hamas’ refusal to release hostages and the breakdown of ceasefire discussions regarding Gaza.

While PA missions at the United Nations will receive certain exemptions under the United Nations Headquarters Agreement, the U.S. remains open to re-engagement in line with our laws if the PA/PLO fulfills its obligations and takes tangible steps towards fostering compromise and peaceful coexistence with Israel.

The visa denial affects Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and could hinder plans for the Palestinian declaration of statehood, potentially altering perceptions by countries like France, Britain, and Australia among others.
