Modretro Chromatic: A Nostalgic Gaming Experience
Back in December, I got involved with Modretro Chromatic, a portable gaming device designed for playing Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles.
Palmer Lucky, known for his tech ventures and the founder of Andril Industries, introduced enhancements to the device, allowing players to revisit classic Pokemon games. The initial offering includes only Tetris, while other games can be bought separately.
Now, the complete re-release of Modretro has arrived, and it’s visually stunning.
“We didn’t have to be exposed to physical media, so we’re growing up.”
The Chromatic features an original sapphire screen cover and well-designed buttons, alongside improved lighting similar to what you find on modified Game Boys. Plus, there’s an array of exciting new games and accessories.
If you’re interested in the foliage green variant ($199.99), I’d recommend pairing it with matching Koss Porta Pro headphones ($49), which really make a statement.
And yes, I did snatch a pair. These headphones, first launched in 1984, deliver a surprising level of sound quality. They feel particularly comfortable, especially when compared to other options. I tried them out while playing a self-simulated game ($39.99) called Rob-ESCE ROBOT, and the sound quality outshone newer models from brands like JBL and Sony.
Just a heads up: slipping these retro headphones on might send you back to the days of road trips in your family’s station wagon.
In other news, gamers will be delighted to see the return of Sabrina’s classic title: Zap! ($39.99), which originally debuted for the Game Boy Color in 2000. This re-release is a testament to Modretro’s commitment to rekindling nostalgic feelings for various player demographics.
For those wanting to dabble in DIY, a mod kit ($14.99) is available for budding engineers. It allows users to customize parts and buttons without needing advanced technical skills.
Another notable feature of the Chromatic is the ability to stream gameplay directly to Discord, Mac, or PC without extra hardware.
I asked Torin Herndon, the CEO of Modretro, why this capability was essential. “Many devices need docks for video streaming, which can limit how you use them,” he explained. “I thought it was crucial to enable streaming while using a handheld with the right button layout.”
But what surprised me was the hidden gem: the Game Boy Camera. Not only can it take retro-style photos, but it also lets you connect the Chromatic to your PC via USB-C, allowing for low-resolution live streaming.
While not everyone may see the value in it, the retro-tech crossover was a delightful find.
Players can also engage with classic Game Boy colors through a Link Cable ($14.99), enabling revived Pokemon trades or face-offs in Mario Golf. Just a note, this feature doesn’t work with the original Game Boy.
There’s a rechargeable battery pack ($29.99) that provides about 16 hours of gameplay after a few hours of USB-C charging—great for those who grew up in the ‘90s. If you’re serious about your gaming collection, you might want to grab the Modretro branded battery.
Herndon mentioned that the interest in Chromatic has extended beyond just nostalgic gamers. The device’s success is paving the way for new games, kits, and even a Firmware Updater Tool.
He humorously noted, “Last year, we weren’t sure if this would resonate with a wider audience or just attract a niche group like us at Modretro. Ultimately, the interest exceeded expectations, and we wanted to share that experience with more people.”
So, why the resurgence of retro games? How did they determine that not every innovation needs to be high-tech to be appealing?
Herndon reflected on this, saying, “Many new technologies can be daunting, but often there’s value in simplicity. Some classic games take far less development time than modern complex designs, like 160×144 pixel Tetris.” He added that if physical media makes a comeback, it will likely be driven by the desires of a new generation.
After connecting with that Game Boy Camera, I found myself nodding in agreement.
