Bondy and Dean Clash Over Ethics Violations
Attorney General Pam Bondy pushed back against Pennsylvania Democrat Madeleine Dean’s attempts to highlight potential ethics violations during a recent House hearing. Dean aimed to get Bondy to discuss an internal conversation with President Donald Trump regarding the pardoning of roughly 1,500 individuals connected to the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.
Throughout the hearing, Bondy firmly refused to disclose details about her private discussions with Trump, repeatedly stating her unwillingness to talk about the conversation. “I’m not going to discuss any advice or arguments I had,” she insisted. Dean interrupted, apparently unsatisfied with the responses.
“You just put the words in my mouth,” Bondy responded, defending her stance. “I am not going to discuss any conversations with the President. You asked questions; I answered them.”
In frustration, Dean expressed that Bondy needed to answer her questions, even accusing her of “corruption,” given Bondy’s prior registration as a foreign lobbyist for the Qatar Embassy, ostensibly to combat human trafficking.
Dean asked, “Have you ever been registered as a representative of foreign principles under the Foreign Agent Registration Act?”
Bondy replied, “I only worked for Qatar for a brief period on anti-human trafficking efforts during the World Cup. I think you’re mischaracterizing that.” She then pivoted the conversation, referencing Dean’s past remarks regarding former President Joe Biden’s competency, saying Dean had to retract those statements after calling Biden competent.
Dean, back in July, had asserted on PBS News that she demonstrated Biden’s ineffectiveness and suggested he step aside from the 2024 race due to perceived confusion and a lack of public engagement.
Pennsylvania legislators have also raised questions about Bondy’s involvement with Trump concerning gifts, such as private jets from Qatar. Bondy stated, “I will not discuss the legal advice my office gives to the President on this or any matter. This is a Congressional hearing.”
A Republican chairing the committee noted issues surrounding Trump’s memecoin and urged Dean to clarify her questioning of Bondy. As tensions rose, Bondy highlighted ongoing concerns related to child trafficking.
Bondy maintained throughout the session that she adhered to ethical guidelines in her role.
