California Officials Clash Over Violence and Law Enforcement

Attorney General Pam Bondy has criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for what she describes as an ineffective response to the ongoing violence and looting in Los Angeles. She asserted that those engaging in such acts would face federal prosecution.

In response, Newsom, during a public address, accused President Donald Trump of escalating tensions by deploying 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to the area. He referred to this as a misuse of presidential power, warning that it jeopardizes not only civilians but also officers and the National Guard. “California may be the first target,” he declared, “but it won’t stop here. This is an attack on democracy that we’re witnessing.”

Bondy, who is a co-host of “Fox & Friends,” remarked that Newsom has been absent during the turmoil. She stated, “He hasn’t even turned on the TV to see the massive violence erupting here.” She went on to emphasize that, under Trump’s leadership, “America will be safe again. We are committed to protecting all Americans, including those in California.”

Additionally, Bondy pointed out Newsom’s failure to declare an economic disaster for small businesses affected by the riots. Kelly Loeffler, a small business manager, urged Newsom to pursue such a declaration, which would allow affected businesses to access low-interest loans to recover.

As tensions rise, Bondy sent a stern warning to looters in California, stating, “If you loot stores, you’re committing robbery under the Hobbs Act. We’re in a new era where looting is now considered a serious crime.” She highlighted the administration’s intention to crack down on violence against law enforcement, mentioning over 190 arrests made so far.

On the other hand, Newsom claimed the Trump administration acted without legal authority, asserting that the deployment of National Guard units was made without consultation with California law enforcement leaders. He argued that California’s issues only escalated once Trump got involved.

On Tuesday night, a federal judge denied Newsom’s request for a temporary restraining order to limit the deployment of the National Guard and Marines.
