Pam Bondi disputes Sen. Blumenthal regarding claims of military service

Contentious Exchange at Senate Hearing

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy found herself in a heated confrontation with Senator Richard Blumenthal during a Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing on Tuesday.

This clash arose when Blumenthal inquired about the merger related to Bondy’s former company, Ballard Partners. He questioned her, saying, “I understand that in the merger involving American Express GBT (global business travel), Brian Ballard, who has long supported you and led the law firm where you worked, assisted in lobbying the Department of Justice to halt the lawsuit. What was your discussion with Ballard?”

In response, Bondy didn’t hold back, accusing Blumenthal of misleading statements concerning his military service. “Senator Blumenthal, I can’t believe you’re calling me a fraud when you’ve lied about your military records. You’ve admitted that you fabricated information to get elected to the Senate,” she asserted. “How dare you challenge my integrity? Don’t question my fairness as Attorney General, or those at my former company, Ballard Partners.”

Blumenthal, it should be noted, has previously acknowledged that he “misspoke” regarding his service in Vietnam, admitting in 2010 that some of his statements about his military experience were inaccurate. “I made mistakes about my service. I own those mistakes, and I take full responsibility,” he explained back then, clarifying that his errors happened infrequently among the many speeches he delivered.

He expressed pride in his service with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, emphasizing, “Unlike many of my peers, I chose to join the army and serve my country. No one will undermine my military record based on a few misstatements.”
