Federal Investigation into Texas Muslim Community Proposal
Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, announced that U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has initiated a federal inquiry concerning proposed Muslim communities, which might lead to discrimination against non-Muslims.
The massive Muslim center has come under fire for allegedly practicing “religious discrimination” against Christians, Jews, and other non-Muslim groups. This proposed 402-acre community is said to encompass a mosque, approximately 1,000 homes, an outreach center, and senior living facilities, situated around 40 miles from Dallas.
Cornyn remarked, “Religious discrimination is a constitutional violation and an infringement of the federal government.” He mentioned on social media that the DOJ is evaluating whether these actions breach federal discrimination laws.
“We cannot allow religious discrimination or Sharia laws to take root in Texas,” he stated. He emphasized that violations of federal law should be addressed swiftly.
Dan Cogdell, representing Epic, responded to the announcement, expressing, “Epic will cooperate fully with all investigations, regardless of their basis or necessity.”
Cornyn has previously raised concerns about the potential imposition of Sharia laws in Texas, highlighting that “both explicit and implicit religious discrimination violate the 1st and 14th Amendments.” He added that religious freedom underpins the core values of the nation, and he fears this community might threaten that essential protection.
The developer of the project, Community Capital Partner, has rejected these allegations. “Ongoing attacks and unwarranted investigations reveal more about the political landscape than our projects or vision,” they stated. “We are committed to clarifying misinformation about this community and aim to foster a diverse, safe, and inclusive environment.”
Cornyn is facing a challenge for his Senate seat from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, marking a notable contest between the party’s establishment and its more radical elements. Recent polls indicate that Cornyn has trailed Paxton in the Republican nomination race but is optimistic about his chances against the Democratic contender.
